Ryan Gosling plotted a surprise for longtime partner Eva Mendes that was *so* unexpected, the actor speculated he might end up "in the Hudson River" in the aftermath.

At the end of his Thursday night *Tonight Show* interview promoting his new movie *Project Hail Mary*, the 45-year-old actor asked host Jimmy Fallon if he could bring an unsuspecting Mendes — with whom he's been romantically involved since 2011 — out from backstage to celebrate her 52nd birthday.

"If I get her, would you sing happy birthday to her?" Gosling asked a very special audience that was comprised mostly of school teachers, as he prepared mount a rare official TV appearance with the famously private Mendes, with whom he shares two daughters (born in 2014 and 2016).

Gosling quipped that the surprise move might lead to his discovery in the aforementioned New York City river, as the *Tonight Show* camera cut to a shot of Mendes being retrieved from Gosling's dressing room.

When Mendes stepped out, the audience cheered as she turned to them to say, "I love teachers so much. We owe so much to you guys. You're so underpaid!"

Shortly after, Fallon and Gosling cued up the New Jersey-based North Bergen High School's marching band, which helped ring in Mendes' birthday with a giant banner celebrating the star.

Mendes and Gosling previously worked together on the critically lauded 2012 drama *The Place Beyond the Pines*, though their official onscreen appearances have been few and far between in recent years.

Mendes has notably stepped away from acting to focus on her personal life, but has said in interviews over the years that she hasn't entirely shut the door on returning to the big screen. In a 2022 interview on *The View*, Mendes told the cohosts, "I have such a short list of what I will do, before kids I kinda was up for anything," adding, "I mean, if it was a fun project. But now I won't do violence, I don't want to do sexuality, the list is short."

On Thursday's episode of the *Tonight Show*, Gosling also introduced a promotional clip from *Project Hail Mary*, which saw him interacting with the Amazon Alexa device (*Hail Mary* is produced by Amazon MGM Studios) in amusing fashion.

"The IMAX visuals are absolutely stunning. Plus, Eva Mendes herself called it a masterpiece that brings back the magic of the big-screen experience that you just can't get the full impact of on your couch at home," Alexa told Gosling, who quipped, "That Eva Mendes is great, isn't she?"

Alexa then replied, giving Gosling an answer that made him beam before he leaned over to kiss the object.

"Absolutely, she's got this incredible range that people don't always give her credit for," Alexa told Gosling. "From her breakthrough in* Training Day *to that beautiful performance in *The Place Beyond the Pines*, with Ryan Gosling, she brings this authentic vulnerability to every role. Plus, she's been smart about stepping back from acting to focus on family. It shows she's got her priorities straight."
