Elwes has been vocal about his decades-long friendship with Reiner long before the actor and director’s death.

Speaking to PEOPLE in April 2024 about how he “hit the jackpot” by being cast in Reiner's 1980s cult classic The Princess Bride, the Being Charlie actor credited the Hollywood legend for believing in him.

“Well, Rob Reiner really helped me with that,” Elwes told PEOPLE about how the late director helped him get his break in comedy.

“Once I got that part, that really kind of opened the door for me and that's how I got the role of Robin Hood with Mel Brooks,” he said, referring to his titular role in 1993’s Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

"So that was really Rob basically saying, ‘I believe that you can do comedy and I can believe you do serious as well.’ So, yeah,” Elwes said.

During a January appearance on the Today show, Elwes reflected on Reiner's death, saying “It’s still very raw.”

He added that after they met, they “became friends right away,” later sharing how he and his wife of 25 years, Lisa Marie, became close with the Reiners. “They really welcomed us and myself and my family into their family.”

“It’s a great loss. It’s hard to put in words, really. I’m still, actually, kind of processing it,” Elwes said. “Yeah, it’s very sad, very, very sad but I cherish their memory and the fun times we had together.”
