For those of us who have been fans of *Outlander* for seven seasons, I appreciate the jarring opening scenes of season 8. There are a lot of loose ends that need to be tied up before we say goodbye to these characters, and the showrunners aren’t wasting any time by bringing everyone back together at Fraser's Ridge.

The final season's premiere episode opens with Claire (Caitriona Balfe) in a maid's attire, and Jamie (Sam Heughan) telling his beloved not to speak unless spoken to first. I may have checked to see if I had accidentally fast-forwarded, but I quickly realized I was in a cold open situation as Jamie peppered a smuggler with question after question about how he came to pay off his debt at a brothel, using two girls as payment instead of money.

As Claire stands quietly behind the man, Jamie informs the smuggler that he might like to get into the business and asks where he found these particular girls. The man sings like a canary, providing detail upon detail of how he sized up a ship to help carry his goods, found the captain unwilling to part with his wife and daughters, and ended up slitting the man’s throat. When the wife fought like a rabid dog to protect her children, he threw her overboard.

His next breath gurgles, thanks to the knife Claire twisted into his back. He truly dies when she stabs him again. Then she curses herself for not making the death more agonizing for this horrific man.

When does 'Outlander' season 8 come out? What to know about the swooning saga's conclusion

The pieces all fall together when Claire and Jamie return to their room in Savannah, Georgia. The two girls were Jane (Silvia Presente) and her sister Fanny (Florrie May Wilkinson). And the woman thrown overboard was Claire and Jamie's daughter, Faith Fraser, who we all thought died at birth. Why someone took Faith as a newborn remains a mystery, and the thought that her daughter was out in the world, believing her parents didn’t want her, is devastating to Claire.

Jamie reminds Claire that she is his home, and maybe the same was true for Faith. Maybe she found her home with her captain, and they had two daughters whom she loved dearly. And now they have their granddaughter to love and cherish. It’s a miracle that their paths crossed.

The heavy moment is interrupted by silly giggles coming from the hallway. When Jamie opens the door, a brood of children scurry away as Marsali (Lauren Lyle) quips for the kids to let the grandparents sleep. How do I forget that the Frasers are grandparents? And why am I so giddy to see Fergus (César Domboy) pop up on my screen?

Fergus is running a print shop and makes sure to be perfectly impartial, or even complimentary at times, to the British Army. Jamie roams around the printing press room, nodding his approval that it’s a good idea since Fergus is a Frenchman. With a Scottish wife. And the last name Fraser.

Jamie randomly knocks on a few boards and quickly discovers a hollow sound. He’s unsurprised when he finds rebel brochures tucked away behind a secret door. Fergus reminds his foster dad that he’s only doing what Jamie did once upon a time, and Jamie is quick to retort that what Fergus is doing is way more dangerous. Fergus smiles and says that means his work is more vital. Plus, the pen is mightier than the sword.

Something tells me Fergus is going to get in trouble with his rebellious side hustle. If he loses another hand, I won't be able to handle it.

Speaking of side hustles, William (Charles Vandervaart) has a new one that entails him getting drunk every night. In fact, a red coat dumps him on Lord John’s (David Berry) red velvet fainting couch when William is caught fighting a band of rebels. He looks like a vagabond, but claims he’s a lord, and the soldier needs verification from John that William is indeed the ninth Earl of Ellesmere.

John vouches for William, and the soldier leaves. Now John is annoyed that the teething baby he’s been bouncing this entire time is never going back to sleep, and William asks the question we’ve all been wondering for the last three minutes. Did John father a child while we were on hiatus? Who is this kid?

I’m glad you asked. The teething child is Trevor Grey, who is Benjamin Grey’s son. In case you don’t know, Benjamin Grey is John’s nephew and William’s cousin. William’s spirits lift, excited to be reunited with his cousin, who must be around somewhere. That bright light fades when John breaks the news that Ben was taken prisoner and died from an outbreak of jail fever.

William wants heads to roll as vengeance for his cousin, but stops short, wondering how John is in possession of Ben’s baby. John explains that a woman showed up one day with the child in her arms, claiming she was Ben’s widow. William loses his mind at the news, barking at his father that if Ben were married, he would have told him.

John bites back. When was the last time William spoke to Ben? And how can he explain the bundle of love letters the woman carried with her? William screams that John has been hoodwinked by a damned woman, and that damned woman marches into the room to give William a piece of her mind. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Amaranthus Grey (Carla Woodcock). She doesn’t need the approval of a drunken fool, *thankyouverymuch*.

Later that day, John attempts to entice William to return to the army. Nursing his hangover, William shuts that business down, as John implores him to figure out what he wants to do with his life. At the very least, he should go back to England and manage his estate.

This suggestion hits a nerve. William hisses that he doesn’t even know if that is his estate. To make John's nerves fray a little more, William threatens to renounce his title. John’s face turns very red as he forcefully reiterates that renouncing a title isn’t even a thing. The crown, however, can strip you of your title, but the only way that happens is if you are a treasonous person.

Did William perk up at that thought? Please tell me he didn’t.

Regardless of William’s waywardness, John doubles down and tells his son that it doesn’t matter what his last name is, or if he has a title or not. A gentleman would not have spoken to Lady Grey the way he did, and he needs to make things right.

So William does. He finds Lady Grey outside with baby Trevor and apologizes for his rudeness. Then he vows to do all he can for Trevor and Lady Grey. Perhaps this “friendship” will be just the thing William needs to pull him from the guilt he’s experiencing for not protecting Jane.

While William sits in his new reality, Claire, Jamie, and Fanny are reunited with Ian (John Bell) at the old homestead, where the Fraser house burned down. Ian escorts his aunt and uncle via covered wagon a few more miles away to a brand new house built high on Fraser’s Ridge. A very pregnant Rachel (Izzy Meikle-Small) greets them at the door and gives a tour of their new digs.

It has everything. A cozy fireplace. A room with huge windows, letting in enough light to perform surgeries. A bunch of old-timey medical stuff Claire will need for her practice. And even a room for Fanny. What more could you ask for?

A trading post would be nice. And it just so happens that since the Frasers have been gone, a man named Mr. Crombie (Antony Byrne) has made a living out of procuring things for other people. And he’s happy to find some Jesuit bark for Claire, but it will be his partner, Captain Charles Cunningham (Kieran Bew), who will actually acquire the goods.

As if on cue, Charles pops into view, humbled to meet the man and woman who own the land where he and his mother live. Jamie joins him outside and learns that Cunningham is a retired captain in his majesty’s Army. Even though he fought for the king, he has laid down his sword for good. Jamie forces a smile. Knowing this man was on the other side of the Battle of Saratoga doesn’t sit well with him. But since he’s a gentleman, he will give him the benefit of the doubt.

Cunning. Influential. Charming. I think we may have just met a villain for season 8.

We also have our first WHAT ARE WE DOING moment of season 8 when a very bright, very modern doll comes swinging into view. Yes, it’s super exciting that Bree (Sophie Skelton), Roger (Richard Rankin), Jemmy (Matthew Adair), and Mandy (Rosa Morris) are back in the 1700s, but could we not leave the doll in the Regan administration where it belonged?

To Bree’s defense, Cunningham’s mother sees Mandy with the doll, and there is no mention of its unique style. I assume she was distracted by Mandy calling the mean lady the Wicked Witch of the West. Then everyone becomes distraught when Mrs. Cunningham slaps the child across the face for being rude. Thank goodness Bree didn’t bring back a little black dog from Kansas when she tripped through the stones.

Just as I calm my heart and try to convince myself that it’s okay for Mandy’s doll, Esmerelda, to be floating around Fraser’s Ridge, Bree pulls out housewarming gifts for her family. Books. From the future. A kid's book for the littles. *Lord of the Rings* for Jamie. And a medical journal for her mother. This seems super irresponsible, guys.

That night, Bree tries to give me a heart attack by sharing yet another book after the kids are asleep. It’s called *Soul of a Rebel, *and it’s all about Scottish roots in the American Revolution. Written by none other than Frank Randall.

Bree confesses that she didn’t read the book, claiming it was too painful. That doesn’t stop Jamie from flipping through the pages, including the book jacket. One that has Frank’s picture. A man who looks exactly like Black Jack. Jamie is insistent that Claire should have told him of the similarity. Then he grills her, insistent on knowing whether Frank was an honest man. Can Frank be trusted?

Claire is utterly confused by Jamie’s peculiar behavior. Frank was a researcher and would never publish something untrue. Also, who cares? Why does it matter?

It matters because Jamie’s name is mentioned fourteen times in the book. And it also reveals that war is coming to the back country and that in a year’s time, Jamie Fraser will die on King’s Mountain.

It’s a very good question, Claire. Can we trust him? **
