It’s time for Jennifer Hudson’s 16-year-old son, David Daniel Otunga Jr., to learn about finances.

The EGOT winner is opening up about having conversations with David about financial literacy as she partners with Credit One Bank to launch its new Cards on the Table game, available now to download for free.

“My son, he's 16 now, and I've been trying to find ways to teach him different things about credit to prepare him by far better than what I was prepared with — or not,” Hudson tells PEOPLE. “It's hard to get the young people's attention, so what better way than through a game, almost like tricking them into it?”

Cards on the Table allows users to educate themselves on “building good credit habits,” according to Hudson, as the game answers “commonly asked questions” on the topic. She thinks it’ll be helpful for David as he approaches adulthood.

“I want him to understand how important it is to try to create good credit,” explains Hudson, who shares David with ex-fiancé David Otunga Sr. “Like son, don't max out that credit card. Or make sure you pay your bills on time. If you think about it, our credit is our grade in our adulthood.”

The talk show host notes that many people “don’t think” about finances until they’re “in the middle of credit issues,” and she hopes Cards on the Table can help change that. “I'm grateful for a game like this that can help educate my son for the future,” she says.

Hudson gave birth to David in August 2009, about five years after she rose to fame as a finalist on season 3 of American Idol. He’s recently stepped out to several events with his mom, from the 2026 NBA All-Star Game to the American Black Film Festival Honors and beyond.

“He's 16 now, so if he comes outside with Mama, that's a compliment in itself,” she quips, noting that people often marvel at how much he’s grown up. “They still think he's little David, and I have to tell people, ‘Guys, this is the kid. He's not little anymore.’”

Hudson recently experienced a sweet moment with David after bringing him to the premiere of GOAT, a new animated sports comedy featuring the “Spotlight” singer in a voice acting role.

“He was like, ‘Mama, this is a great film,’” she says. “To get the kids credibility, that's a big deal. I'm glad that I could get cool points from my kid at this age.”
