Ozzy Osbourne’s July 2025 death was “a surprise” to his son Jack Osbourne, but a conversation they had weeks earlier hinted the 76-year-old rock legend was “done.”

Jack, 40, opened up about his famous father’s final weeks on the March 4 episode of Jamie Kennedy’s Hate to Break it to Ya podcast, which eerily began with Ozzy’s farewell performance with Black Sabbath on July 5 in Birmingham, England.

The concert — the final milestone in the rocker’s six-decade career — was so monumentous, Jack flew across the pond from Los Angeles with his family to attend Back to the Beginning, a benefit show that also featured Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Tool, Slayer, Pantera, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, and Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins.

The night before Jack flew back to the States, he recalled helping his father prepare for bed when Ozzy, looking at his reflection in the mirror, remarked, “I think I’m going to cut my hair off.” When Jack asked why, Ozzy reasoned: “I’ve retired. I’m not a rock star anymore.”

In hindsight, Jack now realizes “he was done. He was okay with his journey.”

Looking at it philosophically, Jack finds some peace in his dad's words. “I think we do have a choice to a degree,” he explained to Kennedy, a family friend. “If you’re sick, if your body’s primed and in a place, where it’s like, ‘Hey, you’ve got a choice here,’ on a deep spiritual level, I do think that maybe rather consciously or subconsciously, you have a choice where you’re like, ‘Okay, I’m ready to move on.’”

But the Osbourne family was still shocked when the patriarch suffered a fatal heart attack on July 22, 2025. “It was a surprise for sure," Jack said. "Obviously everyone knew he was sick… but we weren’t expecting it to be as quick as it was.”

In fact, the day Ozzy passed began like any other. “He was up, he was doing his thing, had some breakfast, and that was it,” Jack shared.

In February, Jack told a similar story about Ozzy contemplating cutting his hair (and growing a beard) on Corgan’s The Magnificent Others podcast. However, at the time, the grieving son had difficulty recounting their conversation, stopping several times to collect himself as he cried.

But a smile came over Jack's face when he recalled how he responded to his dad's shocking statement: "Shut the f--- up! You're always a rock star."
